When Salt Lake City and Atlanta officials were accused of bribery in their efforts to attract the Olympics to their cities, it underscored the high-stakes nature of attracting huge sporting events.
But drawing sports events to Sacramento is a whole different ball game from the fervor to land the Olympics.
"It's like T-ball, compared to the major leagues," said John McCasey, executive director of the Sacramento Sports Commission, which attracts sporting events to the county.
What matters here are the region's basic selling points, McCasey says: mild weather, a strong fan base, standout facilities and a record in hosting events. And that record is getting better all the time.
Sacramento will host the 2000 U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials July 14 through 23. It also hosted the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament in 1994 and 1998, will host it again in 2002, and landed the 1999 John Hancock U.S. Gymnastics Championships.
