Electric Lightwave Inc. has just finished building the fiber-optic backbone of a $131 million effort to connect Internet systems in its West Coast markets.

The new connection from Portland, Ore., into Sacramento gives the company five times the Internet capacity it previously could offer local customers, said Mike Morey, West Coast general manager. Electric Lightwave also just completed a similar fiber-optic segment from Salt Lake City to Las Vegas.

The company, based in Washington, intends to connect five states with a fiber-optic network of 6,350 route-miles.
