PAT BURRELL LOOKS TO THE horizon and sees a new ballpark rising in South Philadelphia, a slew of good arms firing fastballs in the Phillies organization, and the additions of third baseman David Bell, pitcher Kevin Millwood and slugger Jim Thorne.
"I see a pretty picture coming together," the left fielder said. "Knowing what could happen here excites me. Hopefully, I'm part of it."
Wait a minute.
Did Burrell just say what we think he said? Did he really say that he hopes he is part of the Phillies' future?
Burrell must be trying to be humble, because not only is he part of the Phillies' future, he is also the centerpiece.
He knows this. After all, how many times has manager Larry Bowa proclaimed that this team soon would be Burrell's to lead?
"I like it," Burrell said of Bowa's proclamation. "I've talked about it with Larry. I enjoy the idea of being a force on the team. I've been in that role before."
