SARASOTA, FLA. -- Use of a subcutaneous drain appears to result in improved outcomes in obese gravidas undergoing cesarean delivery, Dr. Haywood L. Brown said at a perinatal symposium sponsored by Symposia Medicus.

At least one prospective, randomized study has shown that the subcutaneous drain reduces risk of wound infection, wound separation, and seromas, compared with the use of sutures for closing the subcutaneous layer and with no closure, said Dr. Brown, professor and chair of the department of obstetrics and gynecology at Duke University, Durham, N.C.
