NEW YORK--Three-dimensional ultrasound results correlated well with hysteroscopy findings and provided more diagnostic information than was obtained through two-dimensional ultrasound in a prospective study of 28 gynecologic patients.
"Three-dimensional ultrasound is feasible and fast. It's well tolerated by patients and is noninvasive. There is very good correlation between 3-D ultrasound and hysteroscopy," and 3-D ultrasound provides additional information compared with 2-D ultrasound, Dr. Andreas Lee said at the 12th World Congress on Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology.
Traditional two-dimensional transvaginal ultrasound was performed by referring physicians, who sent patients to Dr. Lee and his associates for hysteroscopy. Most patients were referred because of abnormal bleeding or infertility; others were referred because of recurrent miscarriage or findings such as a suspected malformation of the uterus. Most patients were premenopausal or perimenopausal.
Dr. Lee and an associate performed the 3-D ultrasound scans and were blinded to results from the 2-D scans. Patients then underwent outpatient diagnostic hysteroscopy under local anesthesia. In the 28 patients, 7 had 3-D ultrasound findings discordant with 2-D scan results, usually because malformations or polyps that were suspected on 2-D ultrasound were excluded by 3-D results, said Dr. Lee, professor of ob.gyn. at the University of Vienna.
In four patients, results from 2-D and 3-D ultrasound were identical but additional information was ...
