The Internet as a global forum gives individuals opportunities they previously lacked to present their views to a potentially huge audience, but it also presents legal questions concerning a person's right to speak anonymously about any subject and that subject's right not to be defamed.

Thompson Coburn attorney Mark Sableman will present some of these questions in an upcoming seminar sponsored by the Bar Association of Metropolitan St. Louis and the Center for the Application of Information Technology at the Washington University School of Engineering.

"The anonymous nature of the comments has led to a lot of difficult legal questions because there's obviously a balance between an individual's right to exercise free speech, even anonymously, and a right of companies and others not to be disparaged," Sableman said. "And one of the phenomenons that that has produced has been the courts' grappling with subpoenas issued to Internet service providers to find out the identity of their customers who are making these anonymous comments.
