Sir Stanley Spencer was one of the most individual artists in twentieth-century Britain--or anywhere. He was born in Cookham, Berkshire, in 1891 and studied at the Slade School in London from 1908 until 1912, where his contemporaries included David Bomberg, Dora Carrington, and Mark Gertler. Spencer was considered sufficiently promising to have his work displayed in Roger Fry's Second Post-Impressionist Exhibition in London in 1912.
