The most comprehensive account of nineteenth-century French jewelry was written by the distinguished connoisseur and creative jeweler Henri Vever (1854-1942). It was published in three volumes between 1906 and 1908 under the title La Bijouterie Francaise au XIXe Siecle. It is a chronological account from Etienne Nitot to Rene Lalique and is a mixture of anecdote and academic analysis. For example, Vever discusses such technical innovations as platinum and aluminum and the introduction of new settings including claws. In addition to his own keen power of observation, he interviewed contemporaries and the descendants of jewelers.
