Blacks survive at higher rates than whites at VA medical centers, according to research results released in January. The study, conducted by Ashish Jha of the San Francisco VA Medical Center and published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), compiled death rates for six ailments: pneumonia, diabetes, heart failure, angina, chronic lung disease and chronic kidney failure.
