A.J. AYER: ("Freddie" to all who knew him, and many who did not) was not a great philosopher. But he was a distinguished one, and well worth a biography. He had an interesting life, and Ben Rogers' book combines liveliness with lucid, and I think accurate, accounts of his subject's philosophical progress.
