SYMPTOMS 
 
   Once, when fevers here were scarlet, 
   they were healed in deep seclusion 
 
   in a sullen limewashed hospital 
   folded into alder, beech and gorse. 
 
   Now, in this our atom triangle 
   --Greenham, Burghfield, Aldermaston-- 
 
   fevers are more subtle, no isolation 
   needed, just a silent vigilance. 
 
   Some of us cannot stop washing, 
   imagining the geiger count across our hands. 
 
   Some conjure bruises like armfuls of tattoos
