(SGT-HCMC) The HCMC government will continue a program to partially cover the cost of transporting students of primary and junior high schools by bus in the school year 2002 in an effort to get more students to use public transport and ease the chronic road congestion.
Do Tien Luc, deputy director of the HCMC Service of Communications and Public Works, said Saigon Passenger Vehicle Co. had been assigned to pick up students of 12 schools in districts 1, 3 and 5.
The program aims to establish a habit of using buses among students to go between their homes and schools, and ease traffic congestion as this affects the development of the communication and transport sector.
Luc said the city government would earmark VND52 billion this year for the purpose and had told the service to carry out the program. Yet, not all is rosy and the most difficult task is how to encourage students to use public transport.
Doan Minh Tam, deputy director of Saigon Passenger Vehicle Co., raised the concern of poor public response, saying that his company had received only 10,242 of the 22,255 questionnaires distributed to seek opinions about using buses among students.
