Gaborone, Botswana (PANA) - Animal health authorities in Botswana announced Friday that the Foot and Mouth disease outbreak in the northern part of the country had been contained.

The outbreak in the Matsiloje area led to the destruction of some 12,197 cattle and 131 pigs.

"Successive clinical inspections and serological sampling of the 7,500 sheep and goats and some wild-life still remaining in the infected zone as well as all cloven hoofed animals in the surveillance zone have shown that the disease has not spread," the Botswana Department of Animal Health and Production said in a statement.
