If you've read most any trade or consumer publication concerning the business or sport of cross country skiing over the past two to three years, you will no doubt have come across a piece about the decline in participation and the perceived "dire" condition of the sport. There remains much disagreement, however, among the "experts" about the condition of the sport not to mention a lack of objective methodology for measurement of its condition. The snow drought that plagued much of the country from 1998-2000 certainly had an effect on equipment sales and Nordic center attendance.
