INFRASTRUCTURE: Lesotho (MRB Nov 2001): Demonstrations against Water Scheme.
Local people affected by the massive Highlands Water Scheme have lodged claims for compensation with the Lesotho Highlands Development Authority (LHDA). The authority refused to divulge the details but the protestors' organisation said demands included a ten-percent share of royalties generated from the dams and a commission of inquiry into the project's impacts on local people.
There were co-ordinated demonstration at three of the dams in the project. The organisers said crowds of 1,000 people gathered at both Katse and Mohale Dams, while 300 more marched at Muela Dam. The LHDA said there were 50 demonstrators at ...
