[MRB Nov 01] Zimbabwe's ruling group is facing the prospect of 'smart' targeted sanctions and more generalised bans on trade and aid as Europe and the US seek to constrain President Robert Mugabe ahead of presidential elections next year. South Africa is also noticeably increasing its diplomatic rhetoric against and is organising another visit by a team of Southern African Development Community leaders to the Zimbabwe president.

However, few analysts believe the pressure will diminish Zanu-PF's harassment of its domestic opposition in the run-up to the presidential election next March.
