Mozambique's main international partners have pledged a total of 722 million dollars in aid in the fiscal year 2002. But a World Bank statement said not enough has been done to control HIV/AIDS, which continues to be the greatest single threat to Mozambique's development programme.
The country's international partners praised the government's absolute poverty alleviation strategy as adequate.
For the first there were also serious discussions over the spread of HIV/AIDS, with the Mozambican government requesting aid in order to deal with the epidemic, but it was noted that Mozambicans have not yet adopted safe sex practices in order to curb the spread of HIV/AIDS.
According to latest government data, the HIV prevalence rate in Mozambique is now about 12 percent of a population of about 16 million inhabitants.
The World Bank after two days of consultative talks with the Mozambican government this month said the aid package is aimed at supporting the country's still fragile economy. About 45 per cent of the general state budget is covered by external aid.
