What piece of music is more lush and plush and Romantic than Rachmaninoff's Second Symphony, and what music company is more noted for its lush, plush recordings than Telarc? It would seem an ideal marriage, and, indeed, it comes off pretty well, with Lopez-Cobos and his Cincinnati forces sounding as rich and luxuriant as the score demands.
I like record producer John Culshaw's description, quoted in the booklet notes, of the symphony's motto theme, which makes an appearance in all four of the work's sections: "It moves through the symphony like a ghost, bringing forward new material and hovering in the background, while the material is being stated and developed."
