Practice, I suppose, made perfect. Hungarian-born Georg Solti had been a page-turner for Bartok back in the thirties while studying under him. His two recordings, London and Chicago, of the "Concerto for Orchestra" display an ample understanding of the composer and his idiom. The recording Decca chose to release on its "Legendary Performances" series of remasterings is the earlier one, from London, 1965. It was probably the best choice.

Solti's later Chicago Symphony digital recording from 1981 is brighter and marginally faster, but it doesn't quite convey the feeling of the earlier effort. In the 1965 interpretation, Solti allows himself a moment's respite from time to time, slowing things down ...
