Shostakovich: Symphonies Nos. 1 and 15. Jesus Lopez-Cobos, Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. Telarc CD-80572.

I listened to this Telarc issue of Shostakovich symphonies the day after suffering through the same company's concurrent release of the Bartok Concerto for Orchestra. The sonic differences are night and day. I could barely make out the individual instruments in the Bartok, recorded with the London Philharmonic, but here in Cincinnati the definition is back in place. In fact, this is one of Telarc's better sonic performers, still a little too warm in the midbass for my taste, but, otherwise, well balanced, robust, and truthful. It makes an even better impression if turned up a bit louder than one might otherwise play it, perhaps because the distortion is so low.

Anyway, I enjoyed both of these works by the Russian composer, his first and last symphonies. The similarities, despite being almost fifty years apart (1924 and 1971), are ...
