Amazing, how often and how fast certain pieces of music get recorded. A few months earlier we had a new Rachmaninov Second Symphony from Jesus Lopez-Cobos on Telarc, and now we have another of it from Alexander Anissomov and the National Symphony of Ireland on Naxos. There is certainly room for more than a few interpretations of this perennial favorite, but I wonder if the market isn't beginning to feel saturated.
Rachmaninov composed his Second Symphony in 1907 or thereabouts, after some initial setbacks in his attempts at symphonic writing. Bad reviews led him to depression for a few years, but by the Second Symphony he was in top form, the new music going on to rival anything from Tchaikovsky for big-scale Romanticism.
For a budget price, Anissomov's performance equals some of the best on the market, if not quite matching ...
