Crowded House, Afterglow (Capitol).
Given that Crowded House started as a healing afterthought to the crash and burn of Split Enz, I find it remarkable that the band gelled as well as it did and that Neil Finn's songwriting rose to heights that the Enz never imagined. It seemed that, freed from the over-attentive oversight of brother Tim, Neil's songwriting blossomed, his spirit soared. The first two Crowded House CDs, Crowded House and Temple of Low Men, were well received critically, but flagged on the rack. However, their third, the critically flogged Woodface--and in my opinion their best, was injected with the brother act that fueled Split Enz and sowed the seeds of the House's demise.
Afterglow is a post mortem collection of songs that for one reason or another ...
