North Mississippi All-Stars, Shake Hands With Shorty (Tone Cool).
Hailing from Tate County, Mississippi, the All-Stars' origins are hard by Holly Springs and Oxford, stomping grounds of the late Junior Kimbrough and R.L. Burnside, two seminal juke wizards whose output we've mentioned before. What the All-Stars do, besides paying deep homage to the two masters, is lash out with a version of white boys' blues, the likes of which you haven't heard since Michael Bloomfield, Fresh Cream, and Beggar's Banquet. Shake Hands with Shorty opens with "Mississippi" Fred McDowell's "Shake 'Em on Down," for my money the raison d'etre of the blues, a slashing, slide-driven juke stomp that could lift a sagging joint clear off its foundation. The North Mississippi All-Stars are brothers Luther (guitars) and Cody (drums) Dickinson and homey Chris Chew (bass). The brothers are the offspring of Jim Dickinson, producer of The Replacements, Ry Cooder, and Big Star, and occasional sideman to the Stones, Aretha, and Dylan.
