Leaders of the Society of Professional Journalists and its Ethics Committee encouraged journalists to balance their passion for great coverage with ethical considerations in light of the human tragedy that continues to unfold in New York, Washington and elsewhere.

Ethics Committee co-chair Fred Brown of The Denver Post advised using the SPJ Code of Ethics as a guide in reporting stories related to the terrorist bombings and their aftermath.

"This is a time for courage to seek the truth, caution to get it right, and compassion to minimize harm, as our Code says," Brown said.
