Abstract
The study aims to identify online instructors' criteria for assessing students' contributions in online discussion forums. The study used an assessment exercise where six online instructors rated students' electronic transcripts taken from an online course. These instructors were later interviewed to elicit reasons for their ratings. The results revealed seven emerging themes that reflected online instructors' emphases in assessing online contributions. These themes were: idea elaboration, new contribution, reflection, creativity, tone, and connectivity.
