The New National Party had lied to the people of the Western Cape, betrayed them and handed their province over to the ANC, acting Democratic Alliance leader Joe Seremane said. He was responding to comments made earlier on Saturday at an NNP rally in Cape Town by van Schalkwyk, who said his former alliance partner, DA leader Tony Leon, was only interested in improving the lives of an elite few. He also said van Schalkwyk's "vicious and unfounded attacks" on Tony Leon were just a feeble attempt to atone for his own racist past. At the Cape Town rally held earlier, van Schalkwyk, flanked by fellow NNP leaders and ANC chairman Mosiuoa Lekota, accused DA leader Tony Leon of "using and abusing" the coloured vote to try keep his party in power in the province. "The NNP government in the Western Cape must make sure it is a government for all the people... and not just a few grand DP people," Van Schalkwyk said. In response, Seremane said the only people abusing coloureds were people like Van Schalkwyk, who were trying to mobilise them by appealing to their deepest fears. "The ANC does not have a monopoly on black support, and the DA will continue to offer an independent alternative to ANC hegemony," he said, adding that many disillusioned South Africans were looking for an alternative to the ANC, who had "failed to deliver on its promises". Lekota and van Schalkwyk made reference earlier to a new order in the Western Cape.
