Thieves who steal railway sleepers -- thereby endangering train passengers -- have struck for the third time in the northern Free State, police said on Friday. Inspector Louis Saaiman said a wide-wake Spoornet track master, Christo van Niekerk, 44, noticed that several of the huge heavy wooden sleepers which serve as a bed for the railway lines were missing on Thursday at Kroonstad station. Digging deeper into the matter, Van Niekerk found that altogether 120 sleepers with a value of R18000 had vanished from underneath railway lines in and around Kroonstad.
