The Legal Aid Board on Wednesday said it would provide legal assistance for four of the six Upington men charged with raping a nine-month-old baby last month. The six men, Piet van Rooi, 39, Jan Mienies, 45, John Radebe, 24, Frans Mosterd, 28, Jan van Wyk, 66, and Joffie Freeman, 32, were remanded in custody until their next court appearance on Friday. Their case was postponed last Tuesday in the town's magistrate's court for four of them to obtain legal counsel. Mienies, Radebe, Mosterd and Van Wyk had yet to find a lawyer to represent them. Chief executive officer of the Legal Aid Board, Ashley Alley, said only two of the accused had contracted private practitioners to represent them. "From the information I received from our Kimberley Justice Centre, most private practitioners refused to represent the four accused. But since the board is an independent constitutional body, our mandate is to represent any South African citizen accused of a crime and provide them with access to representation and a fair trial," Ally said.
