In the introduction to his book, the author claims to innovate in three ways: by taking as his subject all Britain, in a European context, and over the whole of the first millennium. The first two claims, reflecting the title of the new `Britain in Europe' series in which the book appears, fail perhaps to do full justice to his predecessors, long used to conversing with England's neighbours and to venturing overseas for their comparisons.
