PICTURE THIS: a great captain of the ancient world awakes from an intoxicating night in the arms of Cleopatra--an Egyptian "dish for the gods", a "lass unparallelled"--and finds himself face to face with Glenda Jackson. This isn't a joke: it was an event observed by bemused playgoers and wondering critics at the time.
