Austin Community College plans to boost its presence in Hays County and has let Advanced Micro Devices Inc. know it would help the company if it decides to build its next chip fabrication plant south of Austin.
Richard Fonte, president of ACC, says projected growth in Hays County is prompting the school to think about ways to expand its presence there.
ACC doesn't operate a campus in Hays County, an area that's outside the college's taxing district but within its service area. If Hays County voters decided to become part of ACC's taxing area, prices for classes there would drop to one-third of the cost students now pay, Fonte says.
