The Cape Town Press Club voiced its solidarity on Sunday night with Zimbabwe's independent journalists and foreign correspondents, and condemned the Zimbabwean government's restrictions on the media. Club chairman William Smook said: "We regard the latest government-proposed legislation, which would effectively bar foreign reporters from working in the country, as reprehensible and tragic. "Not even under the (white minority) Smith government, which was pretty draconian in its time, were these sorts of restrictions imposed. "Should the legislation be passed it would eliminate the already slim chance of fair and representative elections in Zimbabwe next year.
