The University of Hawaii is on track to compete with the nation's top research schools for dollars that experts say could create an economic engine for the state.

The National Institutes of Health has awarded the UH Pacific Biomedical Research Center $9.3 million to establish a cardiovascular research center, an initiative the university hopes will jump-start its biomedical research plan.
