THE BRITISH PHILOSOPHER G.E.M. (Elizabeth) Anscombe, who died in Cambridge on 5th January this year, had friends and acquaintances in many universities both in her homeland and abroad. She also had some enemies, of whom Professor Simon Blackburn is one. Blackburn did not attack Anscombe during her lifetime but he apparently decided it was safe to do so once she was dead. An opportunity arose early this year when he came to review Wittgenstein's Poker, a book which compares various incompatible stories about a meeting of the Cambridge Moral Sciences Club at which (according to some people) Ludwig Wittgenstein threatened Karl Popper with a red-hot poker.
