Big guys versus little guys. Mature markets versus emerging markets. Brand leveraging versus product consolidation. Premium products versus value pricing. Consolidation versus acquisitions. Retailing versus merchandising. Alternative channels versus familiar channels. Fact-based selling versus impulse buys. And the fights go on.
It didn't take a whole year before Candy Industry's first listing of the Top 100 global confectionery manufacturers required updating. Although this year's table contains many of the familiar names, key mergers and acquisitions, such as Perfetti's S.p.A. union with Van Melle, CSM's purchase of Socalbe, Kraft's pickup of Stollwerck's East European operations, to name a few, have once again altered the landscape. No one expects consolidation to abate. At the same time, mergers and acquisitions -- while enhancing the strengths of global operators -- enable midsized companies to target specific niches, products and categories that the newly formed giants elect to leave as a result of integration and profit enhancement.
Market conditions in one part of the world suffer while other regions begin to enjoy a resurgence. Confectionery's long-standing ability to resist recessionery aftershocks do not negate the negative impact of poor marketing, inefficient manufacturing, poor distribution, sloppy merchandising or the geo-political consequences of terrorism. At the same time, the global marketplace holds plenty of opportunity for confectioners, large or small, as consumers seek out personal rewards and daily comforts in a more frenzied planet. The dynamics of innovative marketing, ongoing breakthroughs in ingredient and processing technology as well as constantly shifting demographics suggest continual changes in the rankings, with numerous exits and entrances. Stay tuned.
EDITOR'S NOTE: Given the competitive nature of the confetionery industry, it's becoming increasingly difficult to compile financial data from privately held companies. Even companies publicly traded don't break out confectionery sales ill easy-to-digest statistics.
Such reluctance in information shining makes any kind of financial listing a "work in progress" document, one that melds financial facts with estimated numbers. Nevertheless, the data published within the next few pages provide everyone with benchmarks.
All of the data collected represents information procured directly from the company via the magazine's survey's, public data available in annual reports, published information from sources such as Hoovers and Food RA Leatherhead Publishing as well as trade periodicals and finally, estimates by the editorial staff. Wherever updates were not available or supplied, past financials were used.
