Religious imagery fascinated nineteenth-century British artists to a degree not seen since Henry VIII's split with Rome. Both the Old and New Testaments provided inspiration for many painters showing their work in the annual summer exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts in London from the reign of George IV (1820-1830) through that of George V (1910-1936). Most of this period was presided over by a queen whose name has come to symbolize bourgeois morality. It was a time when the near monopoly of the Church of England was severely eroded and Catholicism and Judaism came to be increasingly tolerated.
