SAN DIEGO -- Measurement of fetal fibronectin in high-risk women at small community hospitals is a good way of preventing unnecessary maternal transfers to tertiary care facilities, Dr. Davin Lundquist said at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Family Physicians.
But this reassurance has a price: At $225 per patient, the test's cost could offset any savings realized by lowering the number of transfers. In the 6 months following institution of fetal fibronectin (fFN) testing of all high-risk women at the Naval Hospital in Bremerton, Wash., the number of maternal transfers was reduced by nearly half.
