Infants born to HIV-1-infected mothers had elevated heart rates and impaired left ventricular function, compared to control children, Dr. Steven E. Lipshultz reported.
Even mild left ventricular dysfunction can lead to increased mortality, Dr. Lipshultz of the University of Rochester (N.Y.) Medical Center and his associates reported.
Their follow-up study, sponsored by the National Institutes of Health, included 93 HIV-1-infected infants born to HIV-1-infected mothers, 216 internal controls (non--HIV-1-infected) infants born to HIV-1-infected mothers), and 195 external controls (noninfected infants born to noninfected mothers). The children underwent assessment of cardiovascular function every 4-6 months for up to 5 years.
