BALTIMORE -- The Internet is now giving consumers direct access to genetic tests, without the need for any physician involvement.
A systematic survey done last spring by researchers at the National Human Genome Research Institute turned up 14 Web sites that offered health-related genetic testing. At seven sites, consumers could both order tests and receive the results directly, Sarah E. Gollust said at the annual meeting of the American Society of Human Genetics.
"Genetic testing is available in an unregulated context. We believe that health related genetic tests shouldn't be routinely available without the appropriate involvement of a physician," said Ms. Gollust, a research assistant at the institute in Bethesda, Md. Although the number of sites offering these tests is small, the sites are "easily available," she said.
