CHICAGO -- A human papillomavirus vaccine has shown 100% efficacy against carcinogenic type 16 HPV at 3 years, Laura A. Koutsky Ph.D., reported at the annual meeting of the Infectious Diseases Society of America.
Merck's experimental vaccine, composed of viruslike particles, is directed against HPV types 6, 11, 16, and 18. In a 16-center phase III study looking just at HPV 16, 1,533 HPV-negative women aged 16-23 years with no prior abnormal Pap tests were given three doses of vaccine or placebo. The vaccine was well tolerated, and all but two women (99.7%) seroconverted, said Dr. Koutsky professor of epidemiology in the HPV Research Group at the University of Washington, Seattle.
