BIG EAST CONFERENCE
Ed Reed, Miami
He plays on a team with a Heisman Trophy candidate at quarterback, running backs with breathtaking moves and wide receivers with blazing speed. Shoot, even the offensive linemen get more attention than Reed, Miami's forgotten free safety and most valuable player.
He's tied for second nationally with seven interceptions. He also has eight pass breakups and a blocked kick. He has tied the school record for career interceptions (19). All that means little in the grand scheme.
"Stats don't mean anything," says fullback Najeh Davenport. "What Ed does for this team can't be seen with numbers."
Reed, more than anything, is Miami's emotional fuse. He's a motivator in the locker room and instigator on the field. There have been times this season when Miami coach Larry Coker has turned over pregame and halftime speeches to Reed, whose charismatic personality is contagious.
It's more of the same on the field. Reed's smart, aggressive play is the reason Miami's secondary is the best in the nation and why the defense has the Hurricanes primed for a spot in the national championship game in the Rose Bowl.
