BEIJING, Dec 3 Asia Pulse - Political observers in Beijing said Saturday that they were surprised by the election results in Taiwan whereby the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) replaced the opposition Kuomintang (KMT) as the largest party in the Legislative Yuan.
Xu Bodong, director of the Taiwan Research Institute at Beijing Union University, said that the DPP's victory can be attributed to its successful ballot distribution strategy while it demonstrates that its supporters' identification with the party is more stable.
Xu predicted that Taiwan's political quagmire will continue after the elections, and he believes that even if the independence-leaning "pan-green" parties, which includes the DPP, had won an overall majority, the "pan-blues" would have probably become even more united after the elections to fight against the "pan-greens."
