TOKYO, Dec 3 Asia Pulse - The birth of a baby girl to the crown prince and princess Saturday could stimulate consumer spending, economy watchers say.
One private research agency estimates that the arrival of the royal baby will increase sales of baby goods by hundreds of billions of yen. Christmas shopping will also likely receive a boost, some analysts say.
Some economists have noted that real economic growth leapt to 13.3 per cent in 1960, when the crown prince was born, up from 9.2 per cent the previous year. The rate remained high at 11.8 per cent in 1961.
However, any comparison would require caution because the economic environment in those days is quite different from that of today. The Japanese economy was on the eve of a takeoff around 1960.
