Debates among academics, journalists and politicians about the dangers of fascism, neo-fascism and extremism have been fuelled by the recent success of Jorg Haider's Freedom Party in the 1999 Austrian elections, the strong showing of the Vlaams Blok in the Belgian elections in October 2000, the success of Blocher's Schweizerische Volkspartei and the alliance between Bossi, Finn and Berlusconi in the Italian elections of May 2001. If we scan the European landscape, we find parties of this genre in Italy, France, Norway, Denmark, Austria, Germany and Belgium. Yves Meny and Yves Surel's Par le Peuple, pour le Peuple and Bruno Luvera's Il Dottor H.: Haider e la nuova destra Europea and I Confini dell 'Odio are recent attempts to explain the appearance of these new parties of the right.
Meny, Surel and Luvera's interventions need to be placed within the literature that refers to these parties as populist or radical right populist parties. Proponents of the populist perspective range from Paul Taggart's 'New Populism', to Hans-Georg Betz's 'Radical Right Populism'...
