AUSTRALIA POSTS NINTH CONSECUTIVE TRADE SURPLUS
CANBERRA - The Australian government said today that the country's ninth consecutive trade surplus in October was proof exporters were weathering the global economic recession.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics said Australia's balance on goods and services came in at a surplus of $A275 million ($US141.82 million) after allowing for seasonal factors.
JAPANESE UNEMPLOYMENT RATE HITS RECORD 5.4PCT
TOKYO - The nation's unemployment rate rose to a record 5.4% in October, up 0.1 percentage point from September and the second straight all-time high, the Public Management Ministry reported Friday.
The jobless rate for men climbed 0.4 point from the previous month to a record 5.8% amid accelerating restructuring in the transport, communications, manufacturing and construction industries.
