Through the course of one day at the Double Pump Coaches Retreat, Arizona assistant Jay John was among those lectured on various aspects of the coaching art by Rick Pitino, Denny Crum, Jerry Tarkanian, George Karl and Chuck Daly. It was as if the San Pedro Hilton in Southern California had been transformed into a talking Hall of Fame.
John learned plenty as he listened: tips and tricks that might improve the Wildcats and that could help him when he lands his first Division I head coaching job.
Crum made an interesting point about handling players: "You've got to treat them all fairly, but you can't treat them all alike."
Karl reinforced the influence of character on a team's success: "I don't know how many coaches are teaching their kids to be better people as well as players. I know the game is being embarrassed now....
