This second of three columns about obesity deals with obesity in children.
Obesity runs in families. If both of a child's parents are obese, he has an 80 percent chance of being obese. If one parent is obese, his risk is 40 percent, and if neither parent is obese, his chance is 10 percent.
Excess weight in older children and adolescents is a strong predictor of adult obesity.
