Although transparency has long been an issue in international business, the 1997-1998 Asian crisis propelled the issue forward and put it squarely on the agenda for creditors, investors and regulators around the globe. Now a second crisis--the disastrous plunge in tech stocks in the US and Europe, and the threat of a global downturn--has given the issue new urgency.
