How many times have you seen an energetic, lively and brilliant CPA take the podium to speak, only to bore the audience with a dry, data-filled presentation that lacked enthusiasm? After the speech, this person may have even "come alive" with jokes, stories and a sense of humor that would have infused energy into the monotone presentation he or she just completed.

Likewise, have you ever had a one-on-one professional meeting with a fellow CPA that was so monotonous you were only "half there," glancing at your watch whenever possible and counting down the moments until you could escape his or her droning words? What's even more frustrating is when you know the person is usually fun, energetic and lively.

Why is it that so many seemingly boring presenters have wonderful personalities that they hide from their listeners? Surprisingly, when asked, many of these lackluster CPA-presenters acknowledge that they knew their presentation or meeting would be dry and uninspiring; however, because of their profession, they believe that's what their listeners expect--a long-winded, fact-filled dialog that bores rather than inspires.

Unfortunately, many CPAs believe that the uninspiring presentation model is the only "correct" model for a technical presentation. One major company even perpetuates this myth by requiring all speakers to stand behind the lectern and not stray from the written word.

The fact is that whether you are speaking before two, 200 or 2,000 people, the moment you rise to address the group, you assume a position of leadership. In order to enforce your leadership position and inspire others to take action, your presentation skills must be honed. Whether you are talking to a potential client, a colleague, a board of directors or a community group, you are, in essence, selling yourself, your ideas and your firm. Without polished presentation skills, your message could easily get lost.

In today's business world, there are enormous opportunities for those who choose to use simple speaking tools to make their presentations enjoyable and a positive learning experience for their audience. If you want to stand out from the rest of the CPA presenters, here are a few ideas to get you started.
