Advertisers have long helped pay the bills for newspapers, magazines, and television. Now the media have a new source of funds: foundations. But while corporate advertising is separate from news stories, foundations are increasingly funding reporting. Edmonds notes that "the agenda behind the grant goes lightly questioned."
The most aggressive foundation interested in shaping the news is the Pew Charitable Trusts. Pew has spent at least $12 million on the "civic journalism" movement, encouraging Americans to be more involved in their communities. It is also a major benefactor of such magazines as American Journalism Review, Governing, and Campaigns and Elections. Pew also pays for the religion and arts reporting units on National Public Radio, and is spending $5.8 million over four years to pay for media reporting on PBS' "NewsHour With Jim Lehrer."
